WATERBURY, Vt. (WCAX) - Testing has confirmed mosquitos in Charlotte are carrying the Jamestown Canyon virus. Health officials say it’s a bit early in the season to find it and they expect there will be more as the season goes on. The virus is spread to humans through mosquito bites but no one has been reported sick. Most people don’t become ill from Jamestown Canyon virus, but serious cases can lead to swelling of the brain. The first human detection of the disease in Vermont was in Windsor County last September. Officials recommend wearing long sleeves and pants, as well as using insect repellent to lower your risk of getting it. Copyright 2025 WCAX. All rights reserved.
