Mexico were already assured of a spot in the World Cup knockout stages, but they ended their Group A campaign with yet another victory. Mexico made it three wins from three in their World Cup group campaign as Mateo Chávez, Julián Quiñones and Álvaro Fidalgo were on target in a 3-0 victory over Czechia. The World Cup party was in full swing at Mexico City Stadium, with Guillermo Ochoa joining Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in appearing in six editions of the competition. Mexico are on course to play Scotland, as it stands, in the knockout stages, while Czechia were dumped out at the expense of South Africa, who beat South Korea 1-0. This was only the second time Mexico had made at least five changes to their starting line-up from one match to another in a single World Cup campaign, and it showed early on as Denis Visinsky flashed a shot past the left post in the eighth minute. Michal Sadílek and Visinsky continued Czechia’s fast start, but they were unable to test Raúl Rangel, and Mexico grew as the half went on, as Jorge Sánchez lashed their first attempt on target straight at Matej Kovár while Quiñones tried his luck from distance. But buoyed by the crowd inside Mexico City Stadium, Javier Aguirre’s side opened the scoring in the 55th minute when Luis Romo bundled his way past three Czechia players before slipping in Chávez, who skipped beyond Sadilek’s challenge and placed into the bottom-left corner. It got even better for Mexico on the hour when Gilberto Mora‘s incisive pass just evaded Sánchez, but as Tomás Holes went to clear the ball, his attempt deflected off the Mexico defender and fell kindly for Quiñones to prod home. With the game wrapped up, goalkeeper Ochoa was given the final 12 minutes in between the sticks, becoming the oldest player to appear for Mexico in a World Cup match at 40 years and 346 days old, surpassing Rafa Marquez against Brazil in 2018 (39y 139d). And there was time for Ochoa to make an impact, but at the opposite end. His long punt forward found Roberto Alvarado, and he teed up Santiago Gimenez, who saw his effort repelled. However, Alvarado picked up the pieces and laid the ball back for Fidalgo, who rifled into the roof of the net. Mexico were already assured of their spot in the knockout stages of the World Cup, having beaten South Korea 1-0 last time out, and among the changes they made to that team, Mora grasped his opportunity with both hands. At 17 years and 253 days old, Mora became the youngest starter for Mexico in a World Cup match since at least 1954 and the youngest to start any game in the competition since Femi Opabunmi (17y 101d) for Nigeria against England in 2002. Only Sanchez (three) created more chances than Mora’s two, but another young player in Chavez also took his moment. His first international goal saw him become the youngest goalscorer for Mexico in a World Cup match (22y 41d) since Javier Hernandez in 2010 against Argentina (22y 26d). Quiñones also continued his fine start to the World Cup, becoming the first player to score more than once for Mexico in a single edition of the competition after Hernandez in South Africa 16 years ago (also two). The result also sees Mexico win all three of their World Cup group matches for the very first time, while they have done so by keeping three consecutive clean sheets in the competition for the first time since 1986 (also three), and they were deserving victors here. Mexico registered an expected goals (xG) total of 1.79 from their 11 shots to Czechia’s 0.47 from their 13 attempts.
